Faith, Community and Activism
Every musician has a different reason for doing what they love. I've been blessed
with alot of things that inspire me. Its my goal to use my music, and my art, to serve all the things close to my heart. I'm
determined to write songs that people can connect to, and write songs that let me say whats on my mind.
I've dedicated my life to sharing my faith, helping my community, and being an activist.
I try to use my music to blend the three as much as possible.
The Religious Right is WRONG!
The Religious Right has taken over the American church, the Republican Party, and
our country. They are slowly turning our country into something our founding fathers never intended it to be ("the united
states is in no way a christian country" John Adams 1796), and they have turned christianity into something completely contrary
to the core beliefs of Jesus Christ (Love, Acceptance, Peace). Its a key part of my ministry to show people that the public
face of the Church (The Pat Robertsons of the world), does not represent all Christians. Fighting the Religious Right has
become a key part of my music, faith, and activism. In 1963 Martin King said "The church must be reminded that it is not the
master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It must
be the guide and the critic of the
state, and never its tool. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an
irrelevant social club
without moral or spiritual authority."
The Fight Against Poverty
King also said "The curse of poverty has no justification in our age. It is socially
as cruel and blind as the practice of cannibalism at the dawn of
civilization, when men ate each other because they had
not yet learned to take food from the soil or to consume the abundant
animal life around them. The time has come for us
to civilize ourselves by the total, direct and immediate abolition of poverty." The church has become too concerned with gay
marriage and abortion to fight poverty, a much more serious moral threat to our country. If we have the means to feed
the people of the United States (which we do), then it is IMMORAL to not do so. I feel like my yearly show for the portland
rescue mission is my part in fighting against poverty.
Aint No Democrat, Sure as Hell aint no Republican Either!
Our country needs a third party. I probably loathe George W Bush more than any other
public figure in history, but I've lost all faith in the Democratic Party as a true alternative. Clinton passed NAFTA, John
Kerry has stated multiple times that he is for the Death Penalty, NAFTA, and other institutions of our country that I am passionately
against. After 4 years of Bush bashing, the best the dems can put up is John Kerry? Beyond being the most boring candidate
since Bob Dole, John Kerry is an aristoract, just like Bush, and the rich have no right to make decisions that affect the
poor more than anyone else. The Bush administration has passed legislature that has ruined my mothers life, they have sent
young men over seas to die for false reasons, and have made the world LESS safe against terrorism. Its time for the people
of America to demand freedom, to demand thier fair share, its time for the people of America to DEMAND a third party, that
speaks for them.
These are all factors that have made me into the kind of singer/songwriter, and person
that I am. However the biggest reason I'm a musician is because I love the art. I have songs that exist only to be songs.
I also have a known weakness for writing songs about girls. However my main goal, and focus of my music, is probably very
different from many other artists.
Thanks to everyone for all the continual support. I hope and pray that someday
my music will go where I want it to go, and actually make a difference.
Heres the place with the up-to-date info about the best darn Troubador in Portland, Blake Carter Hickman.
